There is a seat in the House of Commons that has never been elected. It has always been there. It will always be there. And most people will never hear about it.

That representative is called the City Remembrancer. Their job, as it has been since 1571, is to watch legislation on behalf of the financial interests of the Square Mile. To lobby from inside the chamber. To ensure that whatever Parliament decides, the City's position is protected.
They were not elected. They will not be voted out. They are simply there.

The House of Lords still contains 26 Church of England bishops with automatic legislative seats. The monarch still gives Royal Assent to every law. The City of London Corporation still sends its unelected representative to watch every parliamentary session.

It has survived every revolution, every reform, every election since.

Five companies control the platforms where most of the world's communication happens. Three companies control the physical cables that carry 95% of global internet traffic. One company processes more than 90% of the world's search queries.
Your router — the device sitting in your home that everything flows through — was almost certainly manufactured by a company with close ties to state intelligence services, running firmware you cannot read, controlled by a corporation you did not choose.

Your browsing history is a commodity. Your location data is bought and sold between dozens of companies you have never heard of. The metadata from your messages — who you contact, when, how often — is more revealing than the content of the messages themselves, and it requires no warrant in most jurisdictions to obtain.
This is not speculation. This is the published business model of the companies whose services you use every day.

Six corporations own the majority of the media consumed in the Western world. They do not need to coordinate. They do not need to send memos. They have the same shareholders, the same advertisers, the same board members sitting on the same committees.
The Overton Window — the range of ideas that are considered acceptable for public debate — is not set by politicians. It is set by editors, by algorithms, by what advertisers will tolerate. It moves slowly, almost imperceptibly, in ways that rarely threaten the fundamental interests of the people who pay for the airtime.
You are not being lied to, most of the time. That would be too crude. You are being shown a very careful selection of the truth. The stories that don't get covered. The questions that don't get asked. The connections that are never drawn between the people in the room and the policies that protect them.

The left and the right fight each other constantly on the terms that the establishment has defined. Meanwhile, the City Remembrancer takes his seat. The banker takes his meeting. The cable contract is signed. And it will still be signed next election, whoever wins.
Not because we think a router changes the world. But because infrastructure is everything. And the infrastructure of communication — who owns it, who controls it, who can read it — determines what is possible.
The internet was built on a principle: route around damage. If one node goes down, the network finds another path. The centralised, corporate internet has deliberately engineered that principle out. Everything flows through their servers, their cables, their terms of service.
